On computers are powered by software, which consists of guidelines, data or tools to perform tasks. In contrast hardware refers to the parts of a computer. Software encompasses applications, scripts and programs that operate on a device and can be seen as the element of a computer system whereas hardware remains constant.

There are two categories of software; application software and system software. Application software is designed to carry out functions or tasks while system software provides a foundation, for running applications and manages the computers hardware resources.
